Reiki is a system of healing and personal development that has its foundations in Japanese Buddhist culture. The word Reiki (pronounced ray-key) has no direct translation to English but is often interpreted as spiritual energy, universal energy or life force energy. As such, it is perfect.
Early in the 1900s a Japanese Buddhist monk, Mikao Usui, used his knowledge and experience to develop a practice that could be utilised by everyone. He created a system that incorporated hands on healing with meditation techniques and a set of principles to live by. He set up a centre from where he could teach and also offer healing sessions.
When we are in tune with this universal energy we experience well being and good health. Of course some of our life experiences and the baggage we carry around with us can interrupt this beautiful flow of energy giving us physical pain, sadness, anxiety or confusion to varying degrees. By receiving a Reiki treatment from a practitioner or by deciding to follow the Reiki way of life, we can help ourselves to become more in tune with our pure and original self. By releasing that which is holding us back we can hope to enjoy the more contented life that sometimes seems to be so elusive. We can let our light shine. Letting go of negative feelings and thought patterns can sometimes cause a little disruption as they go but afterwards…well, how liberating!
Receiving a treatment:
The recipient either lies down or sits comfortably, fully clothed, while I place my hands either on or over the body. The energy will flow as is needed at the time and may be felt as heat, tingling or a flowing sensation, or maybe nothing at all.
A Reiki session can be deeply relaxing, leaving you feeling rested, calm and peaceful. In this state our physical bodies can best heal and our minds can best clear, helping us see the way forward. Reiki can boost our own, natural healing ability and so works perfectly alongside any other treatments you may be having.
